35mm SLR Cameras
Finally getting to the 35mm SLRs, the example above is one of my favorites: the Zeiss Contax S, produced by the East German half of Zeiss Ikon shortly after World war II. The Contax S is the camera that gave us the eye level viewfinder, thus making the SLR a practical alternative to the rangefinder camera; it also gave us the M42 screw lens mount which is commonly associated with Pentax. The one above dates from about 1950, and is shown in the company of its West German rival, a Contax IIa rangefinder of about the same date.
